2012 WEE TIPPLE SINGLE MALT SCOTCH FESTIVAL

Friday, March 9

Bowen Park Activity Centre

Enjoy a variety of exquisite single malt scotches, spirits, local wines and craft brews paired with fine foods at Nanaimo’s ninth annual Wee Tipple Single Malt Scotch Festival.

The Festival features representatives and distributors of distilleries offering samplings of their products in an educational and entertaining environment. Scotch aficionados will delight with some of the rare names and labels making appearances. A late afternoon Masterclass and trade event is planned and will be hosted by Master Distiller Mike Nicholson.

As a third generation distiller, Scotch Whisky has been Nicholson's preoccupation and his life. With his family history deep in the industry, the ambience of distilling was never far away, even as a child. Mike’s thirty six year career began as a quality analyst and includes four years on the “Whisky Isle” where managing the mighty Lagavulin was among his responsibilities. Part showman and part professor, Mike Nicholson will lead the “Presenter’s Table” during the evening’s tastings.

For those who don’t appreciate a wee dram, there will be plenty of options including a Virgin Bar hosted by Modern Café letting the designated drivers ‘get their drinks on’ too. A Tequila Table will return from last year’s Tipple. Craft brews and wines from around Vancouver Island will make guest appearances and some exotic, unique beverages – like local absinthe – have been part of the tastings in past years, so surprises are not uncommon.

Sumptuous food is a big part of the evening with guest chefs preparing fine tapas dishes featuring fresh, local ingredients. Sippers will enjoy a range of delicacies from Island seafood and shellfish harvesters to local charcuterie and cheese makers. Live entertainment rounds out the evening.

“The Wee Tipple Festival is evolving and becoming one of our favourite fundraising events,” according to Crimson Coast Dance Society’s Holly Bright. “Board members are focusing a lot of effort this year on the silent auction, and working on some tremendous raffle and door prizes as well.” Proceeds from the event are a welcome contribution to Nanaimo’s contemporary dance presenter in these tough times for arts groups.

Sipping, sampling and tasting begins at 7:00 pm at Bowen Park Auditorium. An afternoon Masterclass and trade reception will be by ‘invitation only’. A safe ride home is guaranteed.

Don't miss this chance to sample some of the finest whisky ever distilled and bottled in an evening of fun, food and entertainment.

All-inclusive tickets for the evening are $55 and available IN ADVANCE ONLY

MOVING WORDS

A weekend of dance and poetry to celebrate the work of Deborah Dunn

Friday, May 18: Special event with our local poetry and dance community

Four Quartets

Deborah Dunn

Trial and Eros Productions

based on poemS by T.S. Elliot

Saturday May 19: Performance: Malaspina Theatre at VIU, 8 pm

T.S. Eliot considered Four Quartets to be his masterpiece. The choreography embraces Eliot's play of imagery and abstractions, its lyric and architectural style weaving through the musicality of the language to meet the grace and power of the words.  Four Quartets presents a contemplative world while not letting go the humour and sensuality characteristic of Deborah's work.

Sunday, May 20: Masterclass with Deborah Dunn: Dancing with words.

Special event with our local poetry and dance community
